NRL Casualty Ward: Cameron Munster to require surgery, Coates injures shoulder

Storm’s injury crisis has taken a turn for the worst, with star playmaker Cameron Munster set to miss some time after flying back to Melbourne for emergency surgery.

Melbourne superstar Cameron Munster will miss at least two games after undergoing surgery on Friday to repair the finger he fractured in the Storm’s season-opening win over Parramatta on Thursday night.

Munster flew back to Melbourne on Friday morning and the Storm confirmed he would be sidelined for at least a fortnight, ruling him out of games against the Bulldogs and the Gold Coast Titans.

Winger Xavier Coates was another casualty of the win over Parramatta to open the NRL season – he is expected to be out for up to two matches after spraining the SC joint in his shoulder.

Munster damaged his finger in the opening half of the game against the Eels but played the entire second half to help Melbourne maintain their remarkable streak of never losing in the opening round under Craig Bellamy’s coaching.

“Storm five-eighth Cameron Munster is expected to miss the next two to three NRL matches following surgery in Melbourne today to fix a compound fracture of his ring finger sustained in the win against Parramatta last night,” the Storm said.


Coates underwent scans on Friday which cleared him of serious damage to his shoulder, although he is still expected to be sidelined for up to a fortnight.

Elsewhere, Parramatta’s Will Penisini and IsaacLumelume had to leave the field for HIA tests.
