Luke Metcalf stars again as Warriors win 15-14 over Dragons
Luke Metcalf has once again proved to be the Warriors matchwinner, as the Dragons produced a stunning comeback, only to fall short at the death, despite scoring more tries than New Zealand.
Brilliant one half. Ordinary the other. It’s not quite a tourism slogan but it could certainly but a catchphrase for the NRL in round 10.
The Dragons and the Warriors clash at WIN Stadium was the latest game this week to produce a comeback so significant it seemed unbelievable at one point during the game. Only this time the team who led managed to hold on despite the Dragons scoring three tries to two.
The Warriors raced to a 14-0 wind assisted lead and looked in total control. The Dragons were falling off tackles and the Warriors were punching through with ease in the middle of the field with a stack of post-contact metres.
Luke Metcalf toyed with them in the opening 30 minutes and looked threatening with his running game with the halfback crossing after eight minutes.
When Taine Tuaupiki scored in the corner just eight minutes later the Dragons looked destined for a long night.
They somehow scored a try to end the first half to trial 14-4 at the break with Clint Gutherson crossing.
Gutherson and opposite fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad both bombed tries either side of halftime by failing to land the final pass.
The Warriors looked like the Dragons did in the first half. Errors coming out of their own end. Failing to hold onto tackles and a complete lack of intent. The Dragons made them pay largely off the back of another impressive stint from Jacob Liddle from the interchange bench.
Dylan Egan crossed after just nine minutes in the second half with Corey Allan scoring three minutes later to have the scores level.
But the Dragons poor start would come back to cruel them.
Only a Metcalf field goal with 10 minutes to go split the side with the Dragons bumbling the final periods of the game to cost themselves any chance of victory.
