Grant Atkins poised to be named as referee for 2025 NRL grand final
The NRL is set to name its grand final referee to take charge of the Melbourne Storm v Brisbane Broncos blockbuster, with a fresh name poised to take charge of his first premiership decider.
Ashley Klein has been axed as the NRL’s grand final referee after his shocker in Melbourne last Friday night.
The NRL is poised to announce Grant Atkins to control his first premiership decider.
Klein had refereed two of the past three grand finals in 2022 and 2024.
While Klein had a poor game in the Storm v Sharks match at AAMI Park, Atkins got a pass mark for his handling of the Broncos v Penrith Panthers.
He was criticised for not sending Penrith second-rower Liam Martin to the sin bin for escalating a one-on-one disagreement between Ezra Mam and Nathan Cleary.
It is a proud family moment for Atkins, whose father Graeme played in grand finals on the wing for Parramatta in 1977 and 1981.
