The Bunnies won the battle but will face a nervous wait after NSW stars Damien Cook and Cody Walker were placed on report in Souths’ 26-14 win against the Dragons in Cairns.

Alex Johnston scored a double as a Rabbitohs side below their best were pushed by the Dragons, but Souths sealed a crucial victory in front of 8378 fans in Far North Queensland.

While they took home the two points, a two-minute period in the first half could come back to haunt the Bunnies.

With the Rabbitohs up 8-4 within the first half hour and eyeing a win to strengthen their grip on a spot in the top eight, twin reports could throw their finals future under a cloud.

Cook was placed on report in the 24th minute after a dangerous throw on Dragons winger Blake Lawrie, and while he was able to play on after a short stoppage, it didn’t look too good for the former Blues Origin rake.

Just a minute later, it was Cody Walker’s turn for a hip-drop tackle on Dragons fullback Tyrell Sloan.

The duo are crucial to Souths’ success, especially with fullback Latrell Mitchell’s right hand strapped with his thumb and pinky finger heavily taped.

Souths entered the Cairns clash ninth on the NRL ladder, and with a crucial clash against the Knights and a bye to come, the last thing the foundation club needs is two stars sidelined for an extended period.
