Broncos Round 6 team news: Adam Reynolds named to face Roosters, Jaiyden Hunt promoted to starting 13
Michael Maguire has named Adam Reynolds to start in Brisbane’s Round 6 clash despite the halfback carrying a niggling injury, while Brendan Piakura’s replacement has been locked in.
Ben Hunt has urged Broncos bosses not to axe Adam Reynolds due to salary-cap pressures as the champion skipper races the clock to be fit for Friday night’s showdown with the Roosters.
The Broncos have received a ray of hope with the injured Reynolds (hamstring) named in the No.7 jumper for the clash with fellow glamour club the Roosters at Suncorp Stadium.
Reynolds, who injured his hamstring in last week’s 46-24 defeat of the Tigers, took part in Tuesday’s training session and will make a definitive call pending a fitness test at the captain’s run on Thursday.
While the veteran halfback is taking no risks, Reynolds remains confident he will play as he looks to cement the halves union that saw he and Hunt engineer a 50-14 rout of the Roosters in round 1.
Hunt is on standby to potentially move from five-eighth to halfback but the Broncos pivot hopes Reynolds gets the green light from Brisbane medicos.
“The talk is that Reyno will play,” Hunt said.
“He said he is feeling really good.
“His scan came back pretty positive so I am looking forward to playing with him again.”
Hunt’s alliance in the opening five rounds with Reynolds has been so promising that the Queensland Origin star appealed for Broncos bosses to do everything possible to keep the premiership halfback at Red Hill.
Off-contract at season’s end, Reynolds has flagged his interest in playing on in 2026, which could have salary-cap repercussions for a Broncos club that was financially planning for his retirement this year.

Reynolds turns 35 in July, but Hunt doesn’t want his halves partner to walk away. He is adamant Reynolds can soldier on in 2026 - if Brisbane can afford him.
“Definitely. The way he is playing, I don’t see why not,” said Hunt when asked if Reynolds should play on next year.
“I don’t know how his body is going on with things, but he is playing excellent footy and if he still wants to go on I don’t see why not.
“It’s just his leadership and direction (that’s so vital for the Broncos).
“He is playing on the ball, he is in the middle of the field all the time, he is getting our forwards around and his kicking game is the best in the league.”
In other selection news, Jaiyden Hunt will start in the back row following the loss of Brendan Piakura (two-game suspension), bringing veteran prop Martin Taupau onto the bench.
Should Reynolds fail a fitness test at the captain’s run, Maguire could move Hunt to halfback or keep him on Brisbane’s left edge in the No.6 jumper by summoning long-time understudy Jock Madden.
Madden was outstanding for feeder-club Wynnum Manly on Sunday, scoring a try and producing two try assists in the Seagulls’ 54-20 mauling of the Magpies.
“My preference would always be to have ‘Reyno’ there, but it doesn’t bother me a whole lot to be fair,” Hunt said.
“’Madge’ (Broncos coach Michael Maguire) has talked about the possibility of Billy (Walters) or Jock coming in and playing there, we aren’t too sure, but I could just fill into that spot (at halfback).
“Whoever came in would do the job (at halfback) and I would be happy to do any job.
“From what I have seen through pre-season, Jock is the ultimate professional. He knows the playbook back to front and if he got the opportunity, he wouldn’t let anyone down.
“If he was the one to come in, he would do the job.”
