Giddy Roosters discuss huge GF scare

Brisbane star Gayle Broughton is set to become a dual international after being named to debut for the resurgent Kiwis Ferns.

Three seasons after making the a code switch, the New Zealand rugby sevens Olympic gold Medallist will finally get her chance to wear rugby league’ black jersey.

A back injury that required surgery kept her out of the team for last year’s Pacific Championships but 2024 was her best season yet in the NRLW, helping guide the Broncos to the minor premiership.

Her combination with Broncos teammate Mele Hufanga will give the Kiwi Ferns a devastating left edge attack for this year’s series which kicks off next week.

The 28-year-old is among four debutants announced by coach Ricky Henry on Tuesday with Dragons forward Alexis Tauaneai, Tigers rookie Brooke Talataina and Raiders centre Mackenzie Wiki all named for the first time.

Broughton’s inclusion comes as a boost after former Golden Boot winner and co-captain Raecene McGregor was forced to withdraw from the squad due to family commitments.

Bulldogs-bound half Ash Quinlan and Dragons star Tyla King are among her replacements.

New Zealand face arch rivals Australia in their first clash of the tournament on October 27 in Christchurch, which comes off the back of last year’s boil over win against the Jillaroos.

The 16-10 victory ended Australia’s 15-game winning streak in a historic moment for the side.
