Former Parramatta coach Brad Arthur is on the verge of extending his stay in the Super League ahead of a crucial meeting on Friday.

Arthur is expected to remain at Leeds for at least two more seasons with an eye towards heading the Western Bears in 2027.

Arthur joined Leeds on a short-term deal for just the rest of the season following his Parramatta sacking. Now he is likely to remain as coach of the Rhinos long-term.

There was speculation that Arthur would return to Australia and link with close friend Adam O’Brien and join O’Brien’s coaching staff in Newcastle.

But Arthur has long maintained he is a head coach. He will get that opportunity to continue in that role with Leeds.

Arthur has already been linked with heading up the NRL’s 18th team when the Perth-based Western Bears are formally announced later this year. Arthur has family connections to the region. The deal with Leeds would most likely have a get-out clause for an NRL opportunity.

“My wife gets here on Saturday and I suppose she’s going to be the last piece of it now to make sure she’s comfortable,” Arthur said this week. “I’m sure she will be because she’s followed me around. Footy has been our whole life so that won’t be an issue.

“I’ve been honest the whole way through that I want to coach in the NRL but I’m a realist and don’t feel like there will be an NRL job there for me next year.”

By committing for two years it allows him to return to the NRL in time to coach the new side. The Bears though may want their coach full-time working on building the roster in 2026 ahead of their first season.

Leeds have won two of their four games since Arthur took charge and remain in finals contention.
