South Sydney have gone from NRL premiership darlings to wooden spoon hot pots as the depth of their dramatic 2024 season collapse is exposed.

The bottom-of-the-ladder Rabbitohs will try to salvage something from their season when they face 14th-placed Gold Coast on Saturday.

An analysis of betting trends at the midpoint of the NRL season reveals the Rabbitohs still hold more money in the premiership than more than half of the competition.

This is despite the former powerhouse going from third favourites to win the title to second favourites to finish 2024 with the most losses.

“We’ve still got a fair few blokes out but the blokes we’ve got here have been playing for a couple of weeks,” interim coach Ben Hornby said on Friday.

“It’s just about improving each week. Nothing’s changed since I started. We’ve got to continue to improve. If we do that, then good things will happen for us.

It comes as Manly emerge as the surprise side punters have backed to miss the top eight on the back of Tom Trbojevic’s hamstring injury, which is likely to sideline him until Round 20.

The Sea Eagles have attracted the most money from punters to miss the finals since the season kicked off in March.

Other insights into betting patterns include:

– North Queensland join Manly as the teams punters believe won’t make the top eight;

– Three teams — Penrith, Brisbane and the Sydney Roosters — hold half the money in the premiership betting market;

– Ladder leaders Melbourne were again underestimated, to punters’ misfortune. The Storm were friendless, at $2.70, in top-four betting, despite finishing there in seven of the past eight years;

– Cronulla still haven’t won over doubters, despite firming from $26 into $8.50 to win the grand final;

– The fourth-placed Dolphins are still a juicy $7.50 to finish inside the top four, with punters unconvinced Wayne Bennett’s side can keep the magic alive in the second half of the season; and

– South Sydney, New Zealand, Newcastle and Parramatta prove the season’s biggest disappointments.
