Israel Folau has surfaced in England, with the sacked rugby star landing in Liverpool to support wife Maria at the netball world cup.

Folau is expected to be in the stands today to see Maria and her Kiwi teammates take on Australia.

The 30-year-old, in a legal battle with Rugby Australia following his contract termination over a social media post claiming “hell awaits” gay people, has maintained a low profile in Liverpool. Yet even before he arrived, the saga surrounding his religious views had bled into netball’s biggest tournament.

Maria Folau has come under fire for endorsing his crowd-funding efforts to help pay legal fees and has declined to speak to press during the world cup.
