Bathurst: Whincup takes Bathurst 1000 in thrilling finish

HOLDEN's Jamie Whincup made it career win number four at Bathurst today, pushed all the way to the chequered flag in the 1000km enduro by Ford driver David Reynolds.

Whincup's win with co-driver Paul Dumbrell, extended his lead in the championship series, which also saw Craig Lowndes finish third.

It was a horror day for the Ford's of Will Davison, who started the day on pole, and Mark Winterbottom.

Winterbottom finished out of the points, needing to take maximum points at the Gold Coast 600at the end of the month to revive his chances of edging out Whincup for the silverware at the Telstra 500 street race at Homebush in December.

Davison, who led in the opening laps, suffered brake failure coming into  Conrod Straight at 290km/h as his Falcon flew through sand traps, narrowly missing another car as it crossed the track before hitting the concrete wall.

He was able to limp back into the pits but it capped a shocking day out where co-driver John McIntyre spun under safety conditions earlier in the race and incurred a drive-through penalty for a pitlane infringement.

''I don't know, someone's got it in for me today,'' Davison told the Seven Network.

''I heard a big bang at the start of Conrod Straight and I thought it might have been the tyre, but it was the rollbar breaking and cutting the brakeline in half.

''I went to just touch the brakes coming into the kink, just to the floor and I just pumped, pumped and pumped.

''Normally you'll get a bit of brakes, (but there was) absolutely zero brake, even when I was spinning.

''It's your worst nightmare, is that happening at that corner.''

It was also a horror day for defending champions Garth Tander and Nick Percat.

Their race was as good as over on lap 37 when Percat his the wall at the esses after striking problems with the car's front suspension.
