A STATE funeral will be held for three-time Formula One champion Sir Jack Brabham.
Tributes have flowed in Queensland parliament after Brabham died on Monday at his Gold Coast home, aged 88.
His 1966 world title win was the first and only time a driver won in a car of his own making.
Premier Campbell Newman said Brabham was a giant in his sport.
FEATURE: Brabham a winner by design
“Like the name Bradman in cricket, or Phar Lap in horse racing, the name of Brabham and motorsport are synonymous,” Mr Newman said as he announced a state funeral.
Brabham was not a Queenslander by birth, but lived on the Gold Coast for almost 20 years.
News of his death sparked a global outpouring of tributes for the former Sydney fruit and vegetable delivery driver who went on to become one of Australia’s greatest sportsmen.
No date has been announced for the state funeral.
