News Corp and Water Polo Australia have teamed up for an unprecedented livestream event that will feature more than 160 matches across two weeks of national and Olympic trial action in Brisbane starting late this month.

Australian Water Polo League senior action, the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships and Olympic team selection selection matches will stream across Australia through The Courier-Mail, The Australian, The Daily Telegraph, the Herald Sun and Adelaide’s The Advertiser, plus many of the company regional websites, including the Gold Coast Bulletin.

Water Polo Australia CEO Richard McInnes said the deal with News Corp was the most comprehensive broadcast partnership in the sport’s history and provided “a unique opportunity to reach new fans as part of a fully integrated media solution’’.

News Corp’s Executive Editor of Digital, Bryce Johns, said it was the first national streaming partnership the publishing division had done.

“Water polo is a progressive sport and streaming is a great innovation in the publishing world. It’s a match made in heaven.’’

Australian water polo great Rhys Howden said having both youth and senior national leagues in the city at the one time was a tremendous promotion of the sport.

“This is really big for the sport,’’ said Howden, who is poised to compete in his fourth Olympic Games in Tokyo.

“With our weather, this is a recipe for great water polo in Queensland.’’

The AWL is a national competition featuring teams from Sydney, Newcastle,

Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide.

Sydney will feature the Balmain Tigers, Sydney Uni Lions, Wests Magpies, Drummoyne Devils and Cronulla Sharks.

The Adelaide Jets, Perth UWA Torpedoes, Fremantle Mariners and Newcastle Hurricanes (men) and Marlins (women) will all compete against Queensland Thunder on its home water.

The youth championships will also feature more than a dozen clubs from around Australia, local power house Mermaids (girls) and Barracudas (boys).

With no international competitions forecast ahead of Tokyo, the Australia Green v Gold matches will be important just 100 days out from the Olympic Games.

The Aussie Sharks and Stingers will be out to impress as part of the Australia Green vs Gold match ups, ahead of Olympic team selection.
