Young New Zealand accountant Joe Collins has done what a new generation of fired up young Aussie ironmen have regularly failed to do in recent times - take a win off surf legend Ali Day.

On the same day an athlete studying degrees in law and commerce outsmarted her rivals to win the ironwoman racing, 22-year-old accountant Collins was exhausted but elated after achieving the rare feat of taking down the multiple champion regarded as one of the greatest ironmen of all time at Newcastle on Saturday in the second round of the professional iron series.

A timely wave in the board leg helped pave the way for Collin’s victory over Ben Carberry and Day who dominated the opening round of the Shaw and Partners series at Wanda before Christmas.

“He just has that X factor, Ali, he always knows how to win, knows how to put things together,” Collins said after his third round win of the professional iron series in five seasons.

“I’m still just a young bugger trying to work things out so I’ll take this. It feels really good.”

Day has indicated this will be his final professional series and wants to go out on a high note.

Collins, who is based on the Gold Coast, plans to do everything in his power to spoil his farewell party despite his utmost respect for the man he swim trains with on the Gold Coast.

“Coming second last year, it hurt,” Collins said.

In another upset, an ironwoman coached by a retired ironman star broke through for her first ever professional series win.

Electra Outram, under the guidance of former pro Wes Berg, held off a fast-finishing Tiarnee Massie and multiple serries champion Lana Rogers to confirm herself as a future star.

But nerves almost derailed the Sunshine Beach competitor before the race start.

“I started to freak and rang my parents and they said, you will be fine, just go out and do what you do,’’ Outram said.

“They know what I am like. I always get so nervous I almost make myself sick.’’

Outram and Collins won a tough day of racing where athlete competed in two early races to determine the handicapped start of the finale.

Collins went into his finale in fifth place while Outram was ranked fourth after her first two outings.

Racing continues in Newcastle on Sunday with another round.
