Former Essendon captain James Hird has spoken of his relief that none of his family where hurt during a midnight robbery where alleged looters took electronics and a luxury car.

Hird spoke to reporters after a luncheon in honour of a country game between Essendon and Geelong.

He was described by SEN radio as visibly shaken by the burglary.

“We were at home (and) someone came and broke into the house, stole the keys to the car,” Hird said.

“It was a bit scary ... but luckily no one was hurt.”

“My son woke up and saw the door open and closed it, it’s all good,” he said. “We just have to find our car.”

It is believed the alleged robbers entered his home in Toorak between 12 and 1.30am this morning. There is no description of the offenders available, Victoria Police said.

“Stonnington Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances,” a police spokeswoman said.

A silver Audi Q7 station wagon, with the registration number XCA-676, and some electronics were stolen while Hird and his family slept. They were not disturbed during the burglary.

Police reportedly hope the car registration number will lead them to the alleged burglars.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
