Trainer Chris Waller to head to the Australian Derby or Oaks with Aeliana with a decision to come on Wodeton

A date with the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes is off the cards for Chris Waller’s emerging staying talent while a decision will be made on Wodeton on Monday.

Rosehill Guineas runner up Aeliana won’t back up in next Saturday’s Group 1 $750,000 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens while star colt Wodeton’s next step will be decided on Monday.

Champion trainer Chris Waller had a Group 1-winning day on home turf on Saturday with Via Sistina but it very nearly could have been an unforgettable occasion with Aeliana, Wodeton (Golden Slipper) and Fangirl (George Ryder Stakes) also running close seconds.

Aeliana didn’t have the clearest passage in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) before surging late to finish a narrow runner up to Broadsiding.

It saw her shorten into a $3.50 second elect behind Treasurethe Moment ($1.70 favourite) for this week’s Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes for fillies.

Waller said the gun daughter of Castelvecchio would not back up in the Vinery but he did have another Group 1 in mind.

Broadsiding shows class and ‘plenty of guts’ in Rosehill Guineas thriller

“She will be among the noms for the (Australian) Derby and we will decide after next Saturday what our best horses are for the Oaks and if she is not it, I would have a crack at the Derby,” Waller said.

“I want to see how Treasurethe Moment goes next Saturday too because if she comes out and blows them away, we will probably go to the Derby.

“She has to run 2400m whether it’s against the fillies or the boys. She gets 2kg against the boys so it doesn’t really worry me.”

Waller is still expected to have a strong hand in the Vinery Stud Stakes with Real Class ($11), Movin Out ($8) and Declichy Boulevard ($11) among the contenders.

Meanwhile, a call on Wodeton’s future autumn prospects will be made at the beginning of the week.

Wodeton, the long-time Golden Slipper favourite, made a late burst through the pack to just miss in the world’s richest two-year-old race behind Marhoona.

Bookies rate Wodeton as the $4.50 favourite for the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ (1400m) in two weeks’ time but there’s no guarantee he will feature in the second leg of the two-year-old Triple Crown.

“It would be unusual for me to push on,” Waller said.

“If I didn’t think he would win a Group 1 as a three-year-old, I would push on.

“We will make that call on Monday and talk to the owners.

“We will work out what we got in the (future) three-year-old ranks and where he fits into our Golden Rose and Coolmore (Stud Stakes) picture.”

New international arrival River Of Stars is poised to be among the Waller contenders in the Group 1 $1.5 million Tancred Stakes (2400m).
