After the news emerged of Black Caviar’s death on Saturday, we’ve taken a look back at 10 of her more momentous victories of her incredible career.
She had 25 starts for 25 wins, she was simply perfect in every single way.
Vale Black Caviar.
2010 Patinack Classic
This was the mare’s first G1 success. Ben Melham, filling in for the suspended Luke Nolen, asked more of her with 350m to go and once she hit the 300m mark the race was over, charging home to win by four lengths. The win on Stakes day didn’t just deliver Black Caviar her first Group 1, but also saw Melham ride his first Group 1 winner.
2011 Lightning Stakes
She claimed her second Group 1 in style down the Flemington straight, beating a strong field which included the likes of Hay List and Crystal Lily who went on to win multiple Group races in their careers. Luke Nolen earned his first Group 1 aboard Black Caviar on this day, and never missed a ride on her thereafter.
Next Saturday at Flemington some of the worldâs best sprinters will line up in the $1,000,000 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m), named after the legendary mare whose stellar career consisted of 25 wins from 25 races.

2011 Newmarket Stakes
Crystal Lily, Beaded, Response, Hinchinbrook, Star Witness, Chasm, Eagle Falls, all Group winners later in their career and not one of them came close to being slightly competitive to Black Caviar on this day.

2011 TJ Smith Stakes
This one was particularly famous as, for a fleeting moment, a few might’ve thought Hay List had opened up too much of a gap in the straight. In the blink of an eye, Black Caviar had swept home to 2.8L win. Incredible.

2011 BTC Cup
Once again, Black Caviar edged out one of her great rivals Hay List in front of a crowd of 20,000. The BTC Cup was her first and her only Group 1 win in Peter Moody’s native state of Queensland.

2011 Patinack Classic
Her second win in this race during Cup week. She was priced at $1.05 and when you see her fly down with 200m to go, you almost wondered why she wasn’t $1.01.
2012 CF Orr Stakes
Her lone Group 1 win at Caulfield. Peeled around the bend perfectly, and she trotted home to a 3.25L success.
2012 Diamond Jubilee
Aussies beating the Brits in their own backyard has become a national pastime and the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Stakes was no different. The trip to England was met with plenty of drama and the last 100m of her run was agonising to watch. As her record will state, she got the job done. There hasn’t been an Australian horse that had the hype and lead up into an Ascot race like the one that surrounded her. This was evident as the late Queen Elizabeth II had to pay the big girl a visit after the race. Some say Lizzie met the Queen that day.
An iconic moment in Australian sporting history.

2013 Lightning Stakes
Her third and final Lightning win, and she won the race that was - for this edition - already named after her (the Black Caviar Lightning). She did it in incredible fashion too - her first start since her UK journey, and she broke the 1000m track record (55.42s), a mark that still stands today.
In 2013 Black Caviar broke the Flemington 1000m track record flying down the famous straight in just 55.42 seconds.

On average that's 5.54 seconds per 100m, Usain Bolt's record over 100m is 9.58.#BlackFriday#BlackCaviarFridaypic.twitter.com/El07ycZtQF
2013 TJ Smith
A fitting farewell for Australia’s Queen of the turf. Her swansong capped an unforgettable stint with 25 wins and 15 at Group 1 level.
