Simon Miller plotting bumper 2024 for freak horse Amelia’s Jewel
The Queensland winter carnival is firming as a destination for Amelia’s Jewel in 2024, before a potential crack at the $20m The Everest.
Trainer Simon Miller has revealed the 2024 The Everest is on the wish list for freak horse Amelia’s Jewel – and the Queensland winter carnival could be a potential launching pad.
Joe Pride’s star sprinter Think About It used a pair of winter Queensland Group 1 wins – including the Stradbroke Handicap – to springboard to glory in the 2023 The Everest.
It is a similar formula that Miller is mulling over.
There is a plethora of Queensland winter Group 1s that Amelia’s Jewel could target next year, notably the Kingsford Smith Cup and the Stradbroke and potentially even including the Tatt’s Tiara over 1400m which is restricted to fillies and mares.
The first major 2024 target for Amelia’s Jewel will be seeking revenge over Overpass in The Quokka in April in Perth, after Bjorn Baker’s sprinter narrowly held out Miller’s freak earlier this year.

Miller recently stated the Adelaide or Queensland carnivals would then be strong options – but the Sunshine State is now looming large, even though no final decision has been made.
“You have to work backwards from the spring and see how you want to play it,” Miller told Racenet.
“There is a template to go to Queensland. Brisbane (officials) are going to send me through a couple of different potential programs and I will have a good look at it.
“If we went to Adelaide, we would really only be going there for The Goodwood.
“So Brisbane could be a goer.”

Miller will consult with Amelia’s Jewel’s owner Peter Walsh in the next fortnight before putting the finishing touches on a likely 2024 campaign for their star horse.
Amelia’s Jewel was unlucky when last seen in the $10m Golden Eagle, with rider Damian Lane saying he was lucky to return to the jockeys’ room in one piece after copping major interference.
Miller indicated he was keen for his Group 1 winning mare to have a crack at the $20m The Everest in 2024.

He still hasn’t been able to pinpoint Amelia’s Jewel’s best distance – but he is coming around to a way of thinking that she might be at her lethal best over sprint trips.
“I wouldn’t mind running her in The Everest in the spring,” Miller said.
“I reckon she is very effective over sprinting distances because she loves high pressure races.
“Her ability is that she can quicken in those sorts of races while others are struggling.
“We could bounce off a Brisbane winter into an Everest campaign.”
Amelia’s Jewel is rated a $15 chance in the 2024 The Everest, with the TAB betting market having Imperatriz as the $4.50 favourite.
