Winx, the all-time great race mare, has been served by Pierro – and now it’s a nervous wait to learn if she has fallen pregnant.

The Daily Telegraph understands Winx was recently mated with champion stallion Pierro at Coolmore Stud’s picturesque Hunter Valley property.

But it will be at least another 10 days before the mighty mare’s pregnancy can be confirmed.

Winx has been retired from racing for more than two years but she is revered by race fans around the world and they will be hoping she will soon become a mum.

Trained by Chris Waller, Winx was ran her final race in the 2019 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick, scoring her 33rd win in succession including a world record 25 at Group 1 level. She earned more than $26.4 million prizemoney, also a world record.

The winner of a world record 25 Group 1 races, Winx lost her first foal by I Am Invincible last spring breeding season.

After having a complication-free 11-month pregnancy, Winx was slightly overdue when she went into labour only for her filly foal to be still-born.

She was not served again last spring and was given the time necessary to recover from her ordeal. The mare’s ownership group then announced in August that she would be visiting Pierro this spring.

Pierro is the best son of champion sire Lonhro and has an emerging nick with Winx’s sire Street Cry with the likes of Group 1 Blue Diamond winner Lyre and The Everest placegetter Osborne Bulls which is another compelling reason for Winx’s owners selecting the stallion for their mare.

Meanwhile, the Australian Turf Club’s new Winx Stand is nearing completion and should be officially opened next month.

The Winx Stand has cost more than $25 million but will provide for up to 5000 fans in a multi-purpose, large-scale function centre.
