Impeccably bred mare Clear Thinking turned plenty of heads in the opening race at Scone on Tuesday when she put eight lengths on them in her debut run.

Formerly owned by the Royal Family, Clear Thinking is out of 2015 The Galaxy winner Sweet Idea with trainer Paul Messara admitting she was originally only purchased by Arrowfield as a breeding prospect.

And while her debut was delayed after she refused to load in the barriers at Newcastle on May 25, Messara’s bullish opinion of Clear Thinking as a racing prospect was confirmed after a scintillating performance on Tuesday.

Rarely do horses win by more than eight lengths but it almost never happens over the short 1000m journey.

“Things didn’t go right at the barriers at Newcastle. A couple of little changes, and she was great today. She jumped well, controlled the race, and sprinted well at the finish,” Messara said.

“She is a beautifully-bred mare. We bought her as a breeding prospect, but when she got here, we thought she had a bit of racing in her.

“She has just kept improving, and there is a lot of upside for sure.

“She is by Dubawi and was owned by the Royal Family. She had a few little problems as a two-year-old, but they have been ironed out and she is a lovely mare for the future.

“She’s on her way, and that is as impressive as you could start them.”

Backed into $1.50 with Aaron Bullock in the saddle, Clear Thinking did everything expected of her, and more with the official margin reading 8.2 lengths in the Hawaii Five Oh Maiden Plate.
