The Everest delivered ‘the greatest show on turf’, now the Golden Eagle can help Sydney’s spring carnival soar to new heights.

Sydney’s envied Spring Carnival has reached its crescendo with week after week of world class racing continuing to set new benchmarks.

On Saturday, wonder mare Bella Nipotina became racing royalty – albeit without King Charles III and Queen Camilla on course – with a dramatic win in the $20 million The Everest at a packed Royal Randwick.

Rosehill Gardens and Sydney’s west get their turn soon.

Introduced by Racing NSW in 2019 and now worth $10 million, the Golden Eagle has quickly established itself as one of the premier events on the Australian racing calendar.

It will have an international flavour with four elite foreign campaigners in Australia to target the cashed up four-year-old event on November 2.

Japan captured last year’s Golden Eagle with Obamburumai and will have two representatives in 2024 with favourite Ascoli Piceno and Corazon Beat.

England’s Lake Forest and French raider Lazzat also arrived in Australia last Tuesday to begin preparing for the coveted feature.

It’s set to give the Golden Eagle a truly global audience with contenders across three continents.

Sydney’s carnival has already attracted worldwide attention thanks to The Everest, according to Australian Turf Club Chairman Peter McGauran.

Viewers from around the world joined a modern day record capacity crowd of 49,117 at Sydney’s famed inner city racecourse to watch the richest race on turf.

It again showed why the race has proven has been considered a masterstroke by Racing NSW.

The crowd figure was nearly double the 25,676 in attendance at Melbourne’s Caulfield Cup meeting.

“A modern-day record Royal Randwick crowd of 49,117 people has showcased Sydney racing to the world,” McGauran said.

“World-class racing and a newly crowned Group 1 TAB Everest is being embraced by a new generation of fans.

“Seeing more than 30 per cent of the crowd aged 18-35 gives us great confidence that the TAB Everest will continue to grow as one of Sydney’s must-attend events all year.

“We now focus on the $10 million Golden Eagle at Rosehill Gardens as Sydney’s West comes together for another signature Spring racing event.”

The Golden Eagle program will likely see several The Everest contenders step out in the $3 million The Russell Balding (1300m), which is set to provide a worthy undercard for the feature event while the $750,000 Rosehill Gold Cup and $500,000 Four Pillars Midway give added weight to the program.

It comes after Royal Randwick will take centre stage again next Saturday with the Group 1 $2 million Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) and Group 2 $2 million The Invitation (1400m).
