‘I’m not a huge fan of it’: Aussie golf star Cameron Davis latest player to criticise PGA Tour’s move regarding field sizes and playing rights

Australian golfer Cameron Davis has become the latest in a list of players to show his discontent towards a contentious move by the US PGA Tour announced recently.

Australian star Cameron Davis is the latest player to criticise the PGA Tour’s decision to slash field sizes and take away playing rights for a further 25 golfers as part of the circuit’s most drastic changes in decades.

Davis, who won his second PGA Tour event at the Rocket Mortgage Classic earlier this year, has questioned whether the decision actually benefits the overall game of golf as the sport’s most popular circuit becomes more exclusive.

The PGA Tour’s players advisory council – featuring Tiger Woods and Davis’ countryman Adam Scott – announced the sweeping changes last week, which include only 100 players retaining a full tour card at the end of 2025. It has traditionally been 125.

And some tournaments will have their field size reduced from 156 to as few as 120 before daylight saving, with others to include 132 in spring and 144 in summer in a bid to prevent rounds spilling into the next day due to dwindling daylight.

Davis has a two-year exemption given his unlikely win after a run of poor form earlier this year, but was sympathetic to the plight of his peers trying to claw their way onto the lucrative tour or keep their cards, joining others who have voiced disappointment with the call.

“That’s the direction they seem to want to keep taking it,” said Davis after he fired a four-under 67 on Saturday to be in contention for the Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland. “I’m not a huge fan of it.

“At this point where I’m at in the game, it’s put your head down and keep playing well. As much as I might disagree with what they’re doing, it’s also the best time ever to keep playing good golf in terms of financially.

“To be honest, I’m just going to take next year as [it comes]. I’ve got all the tournaments to play in and I’m on the right side of it. I’ll go ahead and do my own thing.

“But I’ve been on the outside and it’s going to be a lot more difficult, and I don’t think it’s necessarily good for improving the game.”

The seismic change to the PGA Tour for 2025 is the latest upheaval to world golf after the disruption of Greg Norman’s Saudi-backed LIV league.

Davis is the only Australian to have won on the PGA Tour this year and joins a small contingent – including Jason Day, Min Woo Lee, Scott and rookie Karl Vilips – as compatriots to fly the flag next year.

The 29-year-old made birdie on his final three holes of his second round to reach six-under for the tournament to give himself an outside chance of chasing down the leaders at the Australian PGA.

“I haven’t played too much competitive golf since the end of the PGA Tour season a few months ago, so I’m trying to work my way back into it,” Davis said.

“I have been practising hard, but it’s very different actually being out with crowds around and trying to compete to shoot a score for a trophy. So honestly, I’m very happy.

“I haven’t hit the ball super great. I haven’t made a huge amount of putts, but I have finished both rounds very well and I am seeing some nice trends I guess.”
