Yeboah leaps at chance to kick-start career with Wanderers
New Wanderers recruit Kwame Yeboah says he didn’t have to think twice before accepting an offer to join the club.
New Western Sydney Wanderers recruit Kwame Yeboah says he didn’t have to think twice before accepting an offer to join the club as he tries to resurrect his career.
Coach Markus Babbel announced the exciting attacker had signed earlier this week in a bid to shore up his underperforming squad.
A former Queensland prodigy, Yeboah came to notice playing for Brisbane Roar five years ago before he was signed by German club Borussia Monchengladbach on a two-year deal.
After failing to crack a first-team spot, he was loaned to SC Paderborn before signing with German third-tier club Fortuna Koln. However, he was dogged by bad luck.
After breaking into the side this season Yeboah twice injured his ankle and found it difficult to get his spot back.
Now 24, he is keen to get his career back on track, saying he hasn’t given up his dream of breaking back into European soccer.
“I wanted to come back mainly to be closer to my family and to get more football time,” Ghanaian-born Yeboah told The Weekend Australian yesterday.
“I jumped at the chance to come back and to sign with the Wanderers because I had a good feeling about the club.
“It helped that the coach rang me personally in Germany. We had a great chat.
“He has a great background in football as a player and a coach and I trust in him and how he speaks to me and what he wants from me.”
Yeboah said he had come back “a better person” for his five years away from Australia. “I experienced a lot over there and take it as a positive that I was there and played for five years. I am a better person, more of a man.
“Football-wise, yes, I have developed. You’re working at the highest level over there — the training, the tempo of the games, it’s fantastic.
“Technically, I am a lot better compared to the kid that left Australia five years ago.
“Of course, I want to go back one day. I’m still young and feel I have plenty to offer.”
Yeboah has been back in Australia for just a couple of days and while he had a training run with the Wanderers yesterday, he is uncertain whether he will be involved in the game against Melbourne Victory at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium tonight.
“Fitness won’t be an issue as I played two weeks ago but I’m still getting over the jet lag,” he said.
“We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”
In the meantime, Yeboah, who can play out wide or centrally, is just looking forward to getting to play on a regular basis and helping the Wanderers make a charge for the finals.
