The countdown is well and truly on for the Socceroos and coach Graham Arnold ahead of the 2022 World Cup – with only weeks left before the final squad is selected.

And one player who didn't even feature in those clashes is making a bold, late push to be considered by Arnold.

Youngster Daniel Arzani most recently played for Australia at the 2018 World Cup, and has endured a shocking run with injury in the years since. But recent stellar displays for Macarthur in the A-League have thrust him back into the spotlight and the conversation for another World Cup tilt.

Striker Jamie Maclaren is another contender in red-hot form in the A-League, netting four goals in three games to start the campaign.

With the international break behind them, and Arnold demanding his players be fitter and sharper than ever before for their club teams around the world, we take a look at the fortunes of Australia’s talent.

Who is locked-in to join Arnold’s expanded squad of 26 players for this year’s World Cup? Who is on the cusp of being left off the flight?

And the all-important question: which bolters have thrust themselves into the spotlight at the right time?
