Steve Corica backs Sydney FC strikers to find their scoring touch

Sydney FC coach Steve Corica insists he is not overly concerned by his team’s recent profligacy in front of goal despite another frustrating display against Wellington.

The Sky Blues were forced to rely on an Adam le Fondre penalty in the second half at Campbelltown Stadium to claim just their second win in a month on Saturday.

It came after picking up just one point in wayward matches against lowly Brisbane and Central Coast over the past fortnight.

The 1-0 victory lifted Corica’s side back to second on the table, however questions remain on how whether they can regain their ruthless edge.

“We’d like to win lot more comfortable but it is what it is at the moment. We’re struggling to take our chances, but we’ll improve,” Corica said. “And when they do come, we’re gonna hurt teams come the end of the season and in the finals.”

Le Fondre’s clutch second-half penalty lifted him two goals clear in the race for the golden boot on 14 goals from 20 games, however the import was left to rue a handful of gilt-edged chances.

Corica conceded the Englishman has begun rushing his chances on goal.

“I think if you asked him, he would say he is. He had a similar chance against Central Coast, and here again today. He’s snatching it,” Corica said. “I think he probably realised he’s probably got more time. He could take a touch maybe, and then finish. But he’s got a very good record and he’s still scoring.

“And he wants to score more. They’ll come for him.”

Mid-season signing Reza Ghoochannejhad also spurned numerous opportunities to score his first A-League goal.

The former Iran international has yet to score in three appearances so far, however Corica continues to like what he sees between him and Le Fondre.

“I thought they were good today, both of them. Very good,” he said. “I took Reza off to obviously get (Alex Brosque) on. Fresh legs, and obviously Brosquey gives us something going forward as well.”
