Perth Glory coach Kenny Lowe wants referees to provide better protection for Diego Castro after claiming the star player is getting fed up being constantly kicked by opposition players.
The Spaniard produced yet another outstanding display, scoring twice in Glory’s 3-2 win over the Newcastle Jets at NIB Stadium on Saturday night in a result that keeps the West Australians in contention for a spot in the top four.
However, he had to overcome what some believed was special attention from the Jets, who could not contain the attacking magician as he helped himself to a brace of goals.
“Cas is just Cas; he is brilliant, that is the easiest way to explain it. He is a joy to watch,” Lowe enthused.
“But more than anything, he gets kicked, he gets kicked again and he gets kicked again.
“I think the refs have a bit of selective vision on things like that. Then Cas gets fed up in the end and he goes kicking people.
“He shows a bit of mongrel and fight.”
Lowe said he did not know if the Jets targeted Castro.
“I don’t know, it’s just him. He is that good. He wriggles out of spaces he shouldn’t wriggle out of and makes players look stupid at times,” Lowe said.
“But I think somewhere down the line you’ve got to protect him. You’ve got to protect your best players in the league.
“I’m asking the fourth official about it (during the game) but he kept throwing custard in my face, I was scraping cream out of my eyes.
“He is miked up and he can tell the ref (what is going on). Protect the player.
“He did ... in the 92nd minute (when asked if the fourth official did anything).”
The win was an important one for Glory, who needed to bounce back after losing to Central Coast last week.
They are still in fifth spot but Melbourne City’s loss to Melbourne Victory in the derby a few hours earlier means they are now just two points behind fourth-placed City, who face a tough game against Brisbane next week while Glory are away to struggling Adelaide United.
