Milos Ninkovic stars as Sydney put Perth to the sword 4-1
Milos Ninkovic is being tempted by the oil dollars of the Middle East and it is not hard to see why.
He is being tempted by the oil dollars of the Middle East and it is not hard to see why, after Milos Ninkovic put on a masterclass display as Sydney FC continued their unbeaten march in the A-League this season.
The Serbian magician scored once in either half and had Perth Glory chasing shadows in the Sky Blues’ 4-1 win at Allianz Stadium yesterday.
Sydney have now won all six games this season to remain the only unbeaten side in the league. They have a six-point break over second-placed Melbourne City and are already 16 points clear of defending champions Adelaide United, who are bottom.
Ninkovic, now in his second season in Australia, spoke earlier this week about the disappointment of not being granted a release to join a club in Qatar during the pre-season on a deal reported to be worth in excess of $1 million.
But he was quick to say he had a job to do for Sydney and was determined to bring success to the club.
Ninkovic has so far been true to his word as he has been the standout player of the A-League and a clear favourite to win the Johnny Warren Medal. Mind you, he had a lot of help yesterday with a number of his teammates making major contributions including Brandon O’Neill, Josh Brillante and Michael Zullo.
Sydney were great value for the three points yesterday, although it could have been a different result had Glory capitalised on a terrific opening 15 minutes.
But Sydney were able to cash in on a comedy of errors to turn the game around via Ninkovic’s first goal after 14 minutes.
In attempting to pass out from the back and in his own penalty area, Glory defender Dino Djulbic hit the ball straight at Ninkovic. Still, there didn’t seem to be any danger as Djulbic tried to shield the ball for goalkeeper Liam Reddy to come and collect.
But Ninkovic slipped in between the two of them, collected the ball before it crossed the byline and walked the ball into the net.
Glory had looked the better side up to that point but once Sydney got the lead they settled down and caused problems for the Glory defence.
The second goal came on 37 minutes after Rhyan Grant won the ball on halfway.
He found Alex Brosque with a pass before the captain put Ninkovic into the box with a clever ball. Ninkovic then squared his pass across the face of goal for Bobo to have the simplest of tap-ins.
Sydney looked good again in the second half but couldn’t quite put away the killer goal and out of nothing, Perth got themselves back into the match when Joseph Mills’ attempted cross took a deflection into the net.
Glory had a good period of about 10 minutes as they chased an equaliser but they left themselves open and Sydney finally got the gamebreaker with 10 minutes to go via Ninkovic.
Brosque added the fourth in the 88th minute after great lead-up work from Matt Simon and David Carney.
Sydney coach Graham Arnold was delighted.
“We started slow again and that is a bit of a worry. We have to have a good look at that and see what we can do,” Arnold said. “But, to be honest, we were fantastic for 65 minutes or so. They hardly had a shot and we could have scored a couple more.
“Milos is a special player. He plays with a smile on his face every time. If he can relax a bit more he will be even more dynamic. Some of the stuff he does at training...if he brings that to a game, then watch out.
“To be honest, though, every player is doing their job that is why it is hard to pick a team every week.”
