Central Coast Mariners have sacked coach Mike Mulvey.

Mulvey became the first coaching casualty of the season after the Mariners suffered an embarrassing 8-2 loss to Wellington Phoenix in Gosford last night.

Already assured of the wooden spoon for the second season in season, Central Coast were nothing more than a rabble, falling behind 6-0 just after half time as the Kiwis ran riot in front of the small crowd.

An A-League championship winning coach with Brisbane Roar, Mulvey joined the club at the start of the season and there were high hopes he could revitalise the club. A number of new signings were brought in, including Ross McCormack, Tommy Oar and Khalifa Cisse. However, McCormack and Cisse parted company with the club by the middle of the season and Oar has been sidelined with a season-ending injury for the past two weeks.

Despite the early season hopes of the fans, the Mariners have managed just one win this season.

The club has yet to name an interim coach though assistant Nick Montogomery appears certain to take the reins for the last six games of the season.

Former Mariners legend John Hutchinson looms at the likely full-time replacement for Mulvey. He is an assistant coach with A-League club-in-waiting Western Melbourne, bit should have no problems getting a release to eturn to his home town.
