Matildas star Cortnee Vine has given Raygun a run for her money with Halloween stunt
Matildas star has pulled out her Olympic uniform and dance moves to poke fun at a key Aussie moment in Paris for Halloween.
Cortnee Vine has hardly played football since the Matildas disastrous Olympic campaign but the winger put herself back in the spotlight this Halloween – opting to dress as fellow Australian Olympian Raygun.
Vine, 26, who made the move from A-League club Sydney FC to American side North Carolina Courage in June, is expected to be available for the final NWSL round game on Sunday morning (AEDT).The winger, had weeks off with an unexplained absence but played 46 minutes against Angel City on October 13 and made a brief appearance on October 6. She was not named in the squad for their October 20 clash with Bay FC.
Social media posts show Vine in her Australian Olympic tracksuit posing in breakdancing moves and a video of her mimicking Raygun’s routine from the Paris Games.
Raygun’s performance registered zero points in Paris and her quirky routine made her infamous around the world.
The breakdancer was subjected to a slew of online hate and trolling.
While some might find it distasteful for a fellow Olympian to mock another who was treated so poorly – Vine’s fans didn’t seem to mind.
Comments on the North Carolina Courage Instagram page showing off the athletes’ costumes were all positive.
“Hilarious” one fan wrote, “such an Aussie thing to do” said another.
Others called Vine a “legend” and “iconic” for her costume.
“The fact that Courtney is poking fun at her own countryman is so amusing. That said, she literally just pulled the costume out of her own closet,” another wrote.
The post was even liked by fellow Matildas players Charli Grant and Kaitlyn Torpey.
Vine wasn’t the only one who dressed as Raygun on Halloween – it proved popular around Australia as well – retail giant Amazon was even selling a replica Raygun Halloween costume for just under $50.

“I was coming home from the shops yesterday and I saw someone dressed as me out trick-and-treating, I wound down the window and I was like, ‘I love your costume’, and they were stunned,” she laughed.
Vine has played just four games this season – the club has had her listed as an “excused absence”.
Vine also withdrew herself from the recent Matildas camp.
When quizzed on her absence, interim Matildas coach Tom Sermanni said he had spoken to Vine.
“She just wants a little bit more time to settle into that environment and to make sure that when she comes back into the Matildas environment she’s fully ready and fully focused to do so,” Sermanni said.
He didn’t make mention of the fact the star hadn’t taken the pitch for weeks.
North Carolina Courage are due to play Washington Spirit at 10.30am (AEDT) Sunday.
Courage, sitting in fifth, have already qualified for the play-offs.
