Australia’s superstar footballer Sam Kerr has conquered another competition in another country, spearheading Chelsea to the FA Women’s Super League title on Sunday.

Kerr, 27, won the golden boot award for the most goals scored — her sixth golden boot in five years on three continents — as Chelsea dominated England’s top tier.

“This probably means the most to me out of all my golden boots — I feel like a lot of people said I had to come to Europe to prove myself and here it is,’’ Kerr said shortly after Chelsea had claimed the title with a 5-0 victory over Reading.

Kerr, the Matildas captain, slotted in her 21st goal for the season in the 71st minute to seal victory, once again teaming with Chelsea forward Fran Kirby for devastating impact.

Throughout the match Kerr was brilliant, assisting Kirby for her two goals and setting up the fifth goal for teammate Erin Cuthbert after firing in a sharp header.

This season Kirby and Kerr have slotted in a total 52 goals, with their canny positioning creating multiple opportunities for each to assist the other.

“She’s absolutely quality. She’s been on fire this year and she’s a joy to play with,” Kirby said of Kerr.

”I know when I put it in the area she’s going to score and we’ve got a really good partnership, so hopefully we can go one more.”

After the win Kerr was jubilant, joining her teammates on the podium, tongue out, chanting, and then jumping up to sit on the lectern as team officials sprayed the team with champagne. In the dressing room, Kerr had grabbed a beer and poured it over herself, cooling down from the unseasonally warm 20 degree conditions.

Fans were waiting outside the stadium as the match was held behind closed doors because of the coronavirus.

“It’s a dream come true, they’re amazing,” Kerr told BBC 5 Live of her teammates.

Kerr, who has also won golden boot awards in Australia and the United States, is now just days away from another cherished dream — a European Champions League title. Chelsea will take on Barcelona in the final in Gothenburg on Sunday.

Coach Emma Hayes said: “I said to them when they picked their medals up, ‘You like winning? Good. Because you’ve got to win again next weekend’.”
