Marco Kurz’s career at Adelaide United appears all but over, with the German coach revealing he has heard nothing from the club’s hierarchy for a month despite repeated requests for a meeting.

Despite taking the Reds to the finals in his first season and having them poised for playoffs again, and lifting the FFA Cup last October, Kurz has been left in limbo about a new contract for next season in what is a remarkable situation even by A-League standards.

He says he has had no communication with chairman Piet van der Pol.

“No, I have not met yet with the chairman. I am still waiting for him to contact me as promised. I left him messages four weeks ago,” Kurz said yesterday on the eve of United’s game against ladder leaders Perth Glory at Coopers Stadium tonight.

“I have a lot of points to discuss with him, not just my personal future. I would like to understand what the long-term future for the club is and not just for this season … that for me is important.”

Kurz said he could not make sense of the situation at the club, which was taken over by a Dutch-led consortium at the start of the season.

Mystery has surrounded the identities of the owners.

“The decisions the club has taken this season haven’t made sense,” he said.

“I would like to know for the benefit for the players, for the supporters, for the sponsors and for the whole Adelaide United family. What are their intentions?

“We need now a decision — we need stability and calm.

“I am happy here and feel comfortable. But there are a lot of points to discuss and we not only need one meeting, we have to have many.

“Now is very important to find a decision because a lot of player contracts are ending. If you don’t want to lose players, you must know who the coach is for next season.

“Look, I was before Piet at the club and maybe he has another idea (for a coach) and that’s OK. It is part of the job, but we have to speak about it.

“Never have I had in my career before as a player and coach something like this … but I learn every day new things.”

The club issued a statement following Kurz’s media conference, saying Van der Pol had advised Kurz, before travelling overseas, that discussions about the coach’s future would be held on the chairman’s return to Adelaide.

“I returned home to Adelaide earlier this week and have indicated to Marco that I will be sitting with him following our game against Perth Glory tomorrow evening,” van der Pol said.

“Prior to my departure, Marco and I did agree with one another that we would meet once I came back and I am looking forward to this.

“I am very proud of what we are achieving at Adelaide United; the winning of the FFA Cup and the strengthening of relationships with key stakeholders have been particular highlights.

“Most recently, today’s announcement of the re-signing of Michael Marrone is another positive for us all.

“I am excited to return to Coopers Stadium tomorrow night for what is a very important game for our boys.”

It has been rumoured that Kurz is being chased by Brisbane Roar and that he has applied for the vacant position there, which Kurz vehemently denied.

It is understood former England and Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler is the frontrunner to take over at the Roar.

“No, I have not spoken to Brisbane and I have not applied (for the job),” Kurz said.

“I don’t want to talk about my future any more, because it is not important.

“What is important is the team and the rest of the season.”
