Chelsea woes cast doubt on Sam Kerr’s Matildas return
Star striker Sam Kerr’s chances of making a return for the Matildas next month appear very slim after another bleak update from her Chelsea manager.
Sam Kerr’s chances of making a return in the green and gold against Argentina are very slim with her Chelsea coach doubtful the super striker will get on the pitch before the season ends.
Chelsea women’s coach Sonia Bompastor confirmed this week Kerr would not take part in their WSL clash with Crystal Palace or UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final on Sunday.
“I’m not in a position to give any time frame on her return but she won’t be involved in the games this week,” Bompastor told media.
“Sam is progressing in her rehab but I don’t have enough elements to say we will see her this season. Hopefully yes but it’s difficult for me to say.”

Inside the youth revolution that can transform Australian football
There are just three rounds left in the WSL season – which is set to finish on May 10.
Kerr hasn’t played a game since rupturing her ACL at a training champ with Chelsea in January 2024.
The 31-year-old is back training but hasn’t featured in a match day squad despite being named in Chelsea’s extended team list for the Champions League.
Kerr also travelled to Australia for the last Matildas camp but wasn’t part of the game day squads and is understood to have trained separately from the group.
The Matildas are due to face Argentina in a two match friendly series on May 30 and June 2. If Kerr isn’t match fit it is very unlikely the striker will be named in the squad. Matildas will also be without Mary Fowler who ruptured her ACL. And Brisbane Roar is still waiting on scan results for Tameka Yallop who damaged her hamstring in Roar’s finals A-League’s Women’s match of the season on Saturday.
It is going to make Kerr’s return to fitness in time for the Asian Cup very tight as well.
After this window there will be just four left before the Australian hosted tournament kicks off in March 2024.
With the WSL season on a break from May until September Kerr is going to have very limited chances to get match fit.
Her partner Kristie Mewis is also expected to give birth to the couple’s first child in May.
