Sydney FC have become the second A-League club to make a move in the January transfer window, strengthening their squad with the signing of midfielder Anthony Caceres.

Caceres has joined the Sky Blues on loan from Melbourne City for the rest of the season, adding depth to their midfield ahead of what will be a tough schedule where the club will be involved in both the domestic competition and the Asian Champions League.

His signing comes two days after Western Sydney said they had lured former Brisbane Roar attacker Kwame Yeboah back to Australia after a stint in Europe.

Most A-League clubs are expected to be active this month as they look to improve their squads.

The Wanderers are believed to be interested in Melbourne City midfielder Luke Brattan, who played against them on Tuesday night. In turn, City are expected to off-load striker Bruno Fornaroli, likely to an overseas club, and sign a replacement attacker.

Struggling Central Coast Mariners coach Mike Mulvey has already indicated he wants to bring in several players and the club has their sights set on an overseas-based Australian defender with A-League experience. Adelaide United have been linked with a move for Socceroo striker Tomi Juric, currently playing with FC Luzern in the Swiss League.

Meanwhile, Caceres, 26, is expected to be named in the Sydney squad for tomorrow’s match against Central Coast at Jubilee Stadium, provided his clearance comes through in time.

Sydney coach Steve Corica said he was delighted to have Caceres, who started his A-League career with the Mariners, at the club.

“Anthony will strengthen our squad and provide further competition for places,” Corica said.

“He is technically gifted and a very skilful and creative player who I think our fans will enjoy watching. With the Champions League coming up and a lot of games for us during January, Anthony’s ability to play as a No 10 or a No 6 will give us extra depth.

“I’m looking forward to watching him progress.”

Caceres, who is actually on the books of EPL club Manchester City and is on loan to Melbourne City, said he jumped at the chance to join the Sky Blues.

“It was a pretty easy decision to make,” he said.

“Sydney FC are the biggest club in the A-League and to get an opportunity to come here, back to my home city, and be part of a talented and successful team is one I couldn’t pass up. I am delighted to be part of a club that wants to win and push itself every day.

“There is a lot of football to be played, including the Champions League, and I want to get game time and play as much as I can.”

Game time has been at a minimum for Caceres this season. He has started in just one match.
