Alex Grant to make A-League return on short-term Sydney FC contract
Experienced defender Alex Grant’s next move has been officially confirmed – but it is only a short term deal.
Former Perth Glory fan favourite Alex Grant is officially set to make an A-League comeback – this time playing for the Sky Blues.
The centreback’s move to Sydney FC has been circling the rumour mill since he announced earlier this week his time at Chinese Super League club Tianjin Jinmen was over.
He played 10 matches in 2024, scoring one goal.
Prior to his move to the CSL Grant, 31, played for South Korean superclub Phoang Steelers – playing in the AFC Champions League Final and winning the Korean Cup.
It won’t be Grant’s first time in the A-League – he played 85 games for Perth Glory from 2015-2020.
Grant, born in Manchester but raised in Western Australia, said he was “thrilled” to join Sydney FC.
“I know the expectations here, and I’m hungry to add more silverware to my career,” Grant said.
“The squad is full of top-quality players, some of the best in the country, and I’m confident we can achieve great things this season.”
Grant has only signed on to the end of the current season.
Sydney FC head coach Ufuk Talay said Grant would be a fantastic addition to the team.
“He’s played well over 200 games across multiple leagues, including the K-League, Chinese Super League, and A-League,” Talay said.
“He’s a left-sided defender with great composure on the ball and a strong defensive presence.
“His winning mentality and leadership will be valuable in guiding our younger players.
“He’s also a player who can score a goal, which is always a bonus from a defender.”
Grant, pending passing his medical, is expected to be available for the Sydney derby against Western Sydney Wanderers next week.
