Kusini Yengi has stamped himself into A-League folklore. The youngster helped turn Saturday night’s contest on its head, coming off the bench and helping Adelaide United to a 3-1 win over their struggling rivals Melbourne Victory.

Yengi, who came off the bench in the 56th minute scored and assisted United’s second-half strikes which included a memorable celebration in front of a beleaguered Victory fanbase.

Melbourne was on the front foot early thanks to Jake Brimmer’s stunning free-kick but Stefan Mauk’s double either side of Yengi’s strike helped seal the comeback.

Victory’s response from last week’s drubbing was instant as Kruse had a hat-trick of chances to open the scoring but was unable to break the deadlock.

Their dominance finally paid off as Brimmer’s free kick slammed off the bar and crossed the line by a matter of inches to give the home side the lead.

Adelaide finally got back into the game as Mauk took advantage of Leigh Broxham’s scuffed clearance to equalise.

United’s momentum carried over into the second period as substitute Yengi broke past Victory’s Aaron Anderson and fired his shot against the post.

Sydney skipper kicks goal a decade in the making

Alex Wilkinson’s first goal in over a decade saved Andrew Redmayne’s blushes as Sydney FC came from behind to beat the Newcastle Jets 2-1 at Jubilee Stadium on Saturday.

The veteran defender scored just the third goal of his A-League career and his first for Sydney to secure the win late in the game after Milos Ninkovic’s earlier equaliser.

But the Sky Blues had to fight back after another howler from Redmayne gifted Newcastle the lead midway through the first half.

Redmayne has been one of Sydney’s most reliable performers in recent seasons, but the 32-year-old has been off his game this campaign with a series of blunders that have cost his side.

On this occasion, Paula Retre played the ball back to Redmayne, only for the goalkeeper to pass the ball straight to Luka Prso. The Jets youngster had some work to do, but he took his chance clinically to score his first A-League goal.
