Aaron Mooy has no chance of any involvement in the Asian Cup after Australia’s worst fears were confirmed with the star midfielder to be sidelined until February.
As revealed in The Australian earlier this week, Mooy suffered a knee injury during Huddersfield’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal in an English Premier League match on Sunday.
Initially it was understood he might miss between four to six weeks, but the club has issued a statement via its website saying the injury is a little more serious and he will miss the rest of this month as well as all of January.
There were suggestions Socceroos coach Graham Arnold would have still considered picking him in the Socceroos squad for the finals, which start on January 6 in the UAE. The hope was that he would just miss the group stage games but be available for the knock-out stage.
But, the club reports the 28-year-old suffered a tear to the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) in his right knee and will require more time out of action.
Mooy, who took a photo of himself with his knee in a brace after the game, told the Huddersfield website: “I’m gutted to be missing an important time for club and country.
“We’ve got a lot of fixtures over the Christmas period at Huddersfield Town, but I back the team to continue our good performances and get the results that we’re targeting.
“I’m also sad that this injury will rule me out of the Asian Cup. I’d like to wish the Socceroos all the best as they head to the UAE; I’ll be supporting them from afar.
“The hard work on my recovery has already started and I’m looking forward to being back out on the pitch.”
