The Test: All the news and storylines from cricket documentary

David Warner condemned Cricket Australia for not treating Justin Langer with respect, but he also made a telling assessment about how he lost the dressing room.

The new Test documentary lifts the lid on Justin Langer’s emotion-charged ousting as Australian coach, but doesn’t pull off the scabs.

Episode 3 of The Test season two launching on Prime Video on Friday examines Langer’s demise as coach with a series of player interviews, but nothing from the coach himself.

Batsman David Warner makes the telling assessment that Langer lost the powerbrokers of the dressing room.

“From my perspective I could say he lost a fair few players and probably the wrong players,” Warner says in episode 3.

However, Warner also condemns Cricket Australia for not treating Langer with respect.

“He wanted to keep coaching. I think it was a bit of a kick in the face to offer him a six month contract,” Warner says.

Esteemed cameraman Andre Mauger, who was embedded with the team, captures some raw footage of the Australian side’s first team meeting without Langer, when the side arrived in Pakistan in March last year.

When captain Cummins asks the playing group if they need any questions answered over Langer’s bitter exit, the silence is deafening.

Cummins then issues a rally cry calling on his troops to stick together and urges players to block out the stream of criticism that was coming in from ex-greats and Langer’s former teammates.

“The more we just worry about what’s happening here. We don’t need to worry about commentators back home that wouldn’t have a clue what’s happening,” Cummins says in episode 3.

“Look after each other.”

Cummins’ fellow fast bowler Josh Hazlewood said it wasn’t just Langer the team needed a change from, but other support staff as well.

“The team had changed a lot over that four year period,” Hazlewood says in the third episode.

“(We were) probably in need of a different support staff. Different coach as opposed to four years ago when JL started.”

Several players praised Langer for his contribution.

“He was brilliant when we needed him in those initial years,” Cummins said.

Mitchell Marsh said Australian cricket owed Langer enormous gratitude.

“After South Africa he turned it around. We became a team that Australian fans wanted to support again,” Marsh said.

Steve Smith paid Langer the compliment any departing coach could wish for.

“He left the team in a better place than when he started,” Smith said.

Usman Khawaja stressed Langer should not be excluded from the recognition the Australian team is receiving as the No. 1 Test side and one of the country’s best in recent decades.

“Where the Australian team is right now is a by-product of what JL brought to the group,” Khawaja said.
