Former Australian cricket captain Steve Smith has arrived back in the country vowing to “get back into it” after a break overseas.

The 28-year-old headed to the US with fiancee, Sydney lawyer Dani Willis, after a dramatic news conference that followed the South Africa ball-tampering scandal.

Smith was banned by Cricket Australia for a year over the controversy, along with vice-captain David Warner. Cameron Bancroft was given a nine-month suspension for rubbing sandpaper on the ball during the third Test, in Cape Town.

Smith spent just over a month overseas, and was spotted recently winding down at a New York bar.

He took to social media today to announce he was back, and looking to the future.

“It’s great to be back home in Australia,” he said on Instagram.

“I have had some time away to come to terms with everything and now it’s time to get back into it.

“The amount of emails and letters I have received has been incredible and I have been extremely humbled by the enormous amount of support you have given me.

“I now have a lot to do to earn back your trust.”

In late March, Smith broke down while facing the press at Sydney Airport, where he apologised to the public and to his parents before immediately jetting out of the country.

His Instagram post today concluded with a message to loved ones: “To my Mum, Dad and Dani you have been my rock through this and I can’t thank you enough.

“Family is the most important thing in the world and I thank you for your love and support.”

Newly installed national coach Justin Langer said yesterday the door was open for all three banned players to return to the Australian team.

“Cameron Bancroft and Steve Smith — besides Mike Hussey — love the game more than anyone I know,” Langer said.

“They are cricket tragics and they’re great kids. That’s why it was such a surprise they made the mistake they did. They’ve made a mistake.

“We’ve all made mistakes, we can all get better at things. Davey Warner is the same, he’s a really good young bloke.

“If we can keep mentoring and helping them and they want to meet the standards of the Australian cricket team, then of course they’d be welcomed back.”

Smith has a contract with Fox Sports, which recently acquired the TV broadcast rights in a joint $1.182 billion six-year deal with the Seven Network.

Foxtel boss Patrick Delany has indicated a desire for Smith to play a role in its cricket coverage, which includes Tests, one-day internationals and T20 games.
