The MCG is set to have increased security measures ahead of the Boxing Day Test between Australia and the West Indies as authorities warn that a terror attack in Australia remains likely.

It is understood a fence will be constructed around the perimeter of Australia’s biggest sporting stadium as it prepares to host the biggest Test match of the cricketing calendar.

The Melbourne Cricket Club would not comment last night. A spokesman said an announcement would be made this morning. It could not be confirmed the fence was related to terror threats.

A spokesman for Victorian Sports Minister John Eren said the government was aware of security being tightened but would not comment on specifics.

A state government spokesman said there had not been any specific threat directed at Victoria or Victorians.

It is understood initial construction works have started. The fence may act as a security checkpoint, where fans will be screened before entry. The fence is likely to be the biggest security upgrade at the MCG since the Commonwealth Games in 2006.
