Pat Cummins appointed Australia ODI captain

David Warner’s lifetime captaincy ban is still under review excluding the opener from consideration for the captaincy.

David Warner’s hopes of becoming the Australian one day captain have been dashed after Pat Cummins was appointed to the role on Tuesday morning despite Warner’s lifetime ban being under review following a board meeting last week.

Aaron Finch recently stood down from the role as growing calls came for Warner, considered one of the sharpest minds in cricket, to be absolved from the extraordinary ban which he received for his role in the sandpaper controversy.

The timing of the announcement ruled Warner out of contention and comes despite Australia not being scheduled to play its next ODI until mid November.

The board resolved on Friday to review its code of conduct to allow Warner to appeal the ban but as it stands he was not eligible for the vacancy.

The move adds to Cummins workload but the fast bowler said he was open to the job but would need to consider a job share arrangement.

“You’d probably need to look at it a little bit differently to perhaps in the past with so much cricket going on if I was offered it,” he said on Sunday.

“Just playing every single game isn’t realistic. We’ve got a handful of guys that play all three formats.

“In a year like this, T20 becomes the focus leading to a World Cup. Next year might be different with a one day World Cup.

“But with 15 Test matches in the next six months, I don’t think you can expect the captain to play every game because he is captain.”

Cummins said he was looking forward to the role and praised his predecessor.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed playing under Finchy and have learnt an enormous amount from his leadership,” he said. They are significant shoes to fill although we are extremely fortunate to have a one-day squad with a huge amount of experience.”

Chair of selectors George Bailey praised Cummins work with the Test side.

“Pat has done an excellent job since taking on the captaincy of the Test side and we look forward to him leading the one-day team to the 2023 World Cup in India.”
