Mitchell Starc sent for scans, backed to push through pain amid speculation around 5th Test changes

Mitchell Starc was the subject of concern after clutching his ribs and side during the Boxing Day Test – and now the strongest indication has been given over whether he’ll play in Sydney.

Carey opens up on Aussie Sydney focus

Starc has been the subject of concern after clutching his ribs and side at times in Australia’s epic fourth Test win in Melbourne.

It is understood he has been sent for scans and the results were to be crucial towards deciding if he plays in the final Test against India.

“He’ll be fine ... he’ll push through,’’ Carey said.

“I have played with Starcy for a long time now and he is one of the toughest cricketers I have played with. So he’ll grimace. He’ll grab his rib, no doubt. But, he’ll be ready for the contest.’

“I thought that first spell (on the last day in Melbourne) without the reward was, you know, some of the best bowling I’ve seen this series from him. He’s got an opportunity now to help this team in a Test match.

“He’ll be up for the contest. And I think his bowling just got better throughout the series.’’

Carey admitted he was engrossed by the cavalier onslaught of Sam Konstas in the first innings in Melbourne but fans should not expect him to bat that way every innings.

“I couldn’t watch it at times - I was cheering but just the energy he brought was something different. I probably wasn’t expecting that amount of difference but he played a style of cricket that was probably new to India as well.

“I don’t think that is his blueprint every Test but to be able to throw a few punches ...’’

Marsh has been in modest form but Australia’s win in Melbourne is likely to save him.

If, as expected, he is chosen in Sydney he is no certainty to hold his place on the two Test tour of Sri Lanka.
