Mitch Marsh open to Ashes recall as red-ball retirement looms
Mitchell Marsh is set to confirm his retirement from red-ball cricket, but the national T20 and ODI captain will keep the door open to torment England just one more time - if the call comes.
Mitchell Marsh’s red ball career for Western Australia is over - but he would still answer an SOS for the Ashes.
Marsh has told his team-mates on Sunday the just completed Sheffield Shield match against Victoria would be his last red ball game for his state.
His decision will be officially confirmed on Tuesday.
Marsh will now throw himself into this summer’s Big Bash for the Scorchers and will not return to the Sheffield Shield rounds for WA after Christmas.
He is expected to lead Australia in the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February.
Despite his decision Marsh would still answer an SOS for the Ashes if required.
The selectors had spoken about him as a potential storm trooper at the top of the order in early season discussions but his chance appears to be gone given the Australians are 2-0 up in the Ashes series against England.
Marsh was dropped for the final Test against India last summer and went through a difficult period where he came close to retiring from the game.
But he returned to strike peak form in white ball cricket which will now be his focus.
