The father of a budding young cricketer who was caught up in a viral CCTV video involving Sam Konstas is adamant his son will eventually play with the Aussie Test star in the future.

Sirajuddin Khan was dropping off some gear to his son, 12-year-old Shahzad Muhammad Khan, on Wednesday at Cricket NSW’s training facility at Silverwater when he spotted Konstas arriving for a net session with the Sydney Thunder.

It’s a familiar stop for Sirajuddin with Shahzad training up to five days a week as he looks to become a professional cricketer himself following some impressive performances for Blacktown Workers.

But it is his father who has hit the headlines after he quickly parked his car in a disabled spot and jumped out to run after Konstas for a photo before realising he had not put the handbrake on.

“I came to see him at lunchtime and as soon as I came in and I was parking the car, I saw Sam Konstas,” Sirajuddin Khan said. “I don’t know, I just got double-minded.

“And I’m thinking in my head because he was already coming inside. So I said, let me quickly park the car, go ahead of him, get my son out and then I’ll say hello to him and then my son and I can take pictures with him. But it was the other way around.”

To make matters worse for Khan, only minutes later as he went to inform reception of the incident, Shahzad came running out with joy to say he had taken a photo of his own with Konstas.

The white Land Cruiser had slowly rolled into another car, the vehicle of Cricket NSW employee Prashant Sharma, despite Khan’s desperate attempts to stop it.

Khan works in the car industry and has already offered Sharma a replacement car while the minor damage is repaired. The Thunder are also working on getting the Khans to the Sydney Smash at the SCG on Friday.

The video has already been viewed more than 600,000 times on the Thunder’s Instagram channel, and it has also reached millions more cricket fans across the world, as the clip went viral. Captioned “The Konstas effect,” it’s the latest example of the 19-year-old opening batter taking the world by storm.

“I was actually walking in and just trying to have a net session and the boys sent it to me a few hours after,” he said. “Hopefully I’ll see him later and sign some stuff and he’s all good.

“I saw the clip and yeah, it was a bit viral.”

“I had to turn off my phone this morning for like two hours,” Khan added. “When I turned it back on, I had 17 missed calls, 17 people rang me.

“Then last night I was in my room and they were watching the Sixers against the Strikers game. All of a sudden they’re screaming at me, ‘Dad, you are on TV again!’. They had put the video live during the cricket match, so that was fun as well.”

The Khan family aren’t new admirers of Konstas, having been at Cricket Central for his consecutive Sheffield Shield centuries in October.

But given the amount of money and time Sirajuddin has invested into his son’s development, he truly believes that he and Konstas could be teammates in the not-too-distant future, and this will be a funny memory to call back on.

“My son comes to Cricket Central probably four or five times a week, and we know all the players,” Khan said. “Even when (Konstas) scored the two hundreds, he was watching.

“I have the belief he will play with Sam Konstas one day.”

Konstas missed most of the commotion with his mind solely focused on the Thunder’s must-win match against the Sixers on Friday night. A win would guarantee a top-two spot, at least one home final and a double chance in the finals.

Following the first Sydney Smash of the season where the Sixers came away with a last-ball win, the Thunder are happy to admit they’re out for revenge.

“It’s been too long that the Sydney Thunder have probably been in the shadow of the Sixers,” wicketkeeper Sam Billings said. “We respect them, but we’re on our own journey.

“We need to get a bit of revenge after last time at home. They let us know about it as well … the odd comment here or there. It’s all in the bank, we’ll remember it.

“They’re a good side playing well at the moment. Also if you can turn over the Sixers at their home patch, you can take a lot of confidence from that.”

“I went to a (Sydney Smash) when I was really young and I’m pretty sure we smashed the Sixers,” Konstas added. “Hopefully, we do that again tomorrow night.”
