Glenn Maxwell highlights: A stats breakdown of Aussie star’s 201 not out against Afghanistan at Cricket World Cup

It’s been called the greatest ODI innings in history. BEN HORNE breaks down every key stat and record from Glenn Maxwell’s masterclass in Mumbai.

Glenn Maxwell pulls off ‘greatest innings ever’

One week he was suffering concussion after falling off a golf cart, the next he was performing the ‘miracle in Mumbai’, producing numbers that were simply mind-blowing.

It was the night the Big Show put on his biggest ever show, tearing up the record books and doing things no Australian man – and in some cases any international cricketer – has ever done before.

Maxwell’s 201 not out off 128 balls, with 21 fours and 10 sixes is the first 50-over double hundred ever by an Australian male. The previous best score by an Aussie male was Shane Watson with 185 not out.

It was the first ever double century in ODI history from a batsman not opening the innings.

Not even in any domestic competition around the globe has any batsman from outside the top four made a double century before Maxwell.

It was the first ever ODI double hundred from a chasing team.

The Big Show’s heroics also broke the record for the highest score ever from a player batting at No. 6 or lower in an ODI.

Maxwell was just a hair away from breaking Sir Vivian Richards’ record for highest percentage of a team’s total runs (69.48 when he hit 189 not out from a West Indies’ total of 9-272. Maxwell’s 201 not out was 68.60 per cent of Australia’s total of 293.

However, Maxwell’s is the new record for highest percentage of a team’s total in a run chase.

Maxwell and Pat Cummins’ unbeaten 202-run stand now ranks as the highest partnership in ODI cricket history for the seventh wicket or lower.

Incredibly, Cummins’ only contributed 12 runs to the partnership from the 68 balls he faced. Maxwell’s 179 runs in the partnership is the highest percentage (88.61) in a century stand ever in men’s ODIs. Maxwell was breaking his own record with Cummins from only a week previous when he contributed 88.35 per cent (91 runs) of a 103-run stand against the Netherlands.

The 177-run difference between Maxwell’s 201 not out and Mitchell Marsh’s 24 is the second highest score discrepancy between a top score and the next best contribution.

ESPN Cricinfo’s forecaster after 26.5 overs, when Australia was 7-136 and still needing 156 more runs at 6.73 per over had the Aussies a 0.2 per cent chance of victory.

It was the most runs (202) a team has ever amassed after the fall of the 7th wicket in an ODI.

Australia’s successful chase of 292 for victory is their highest ever chase in a men’s ODI World Cup.

Maxwell joins the illustrious company of Chris Gayle and Martin Guptill (both openers) as the only double-centurions ever in an ODI men’s World Cup.

The 128 balls Maxwell took for his extraordinary century was the second fastest ODI double century behind Ishan Kishan’s 126-ball demolition of Bangladesh last year.

Captain Cummins also played a vital role. The 68 balls he faced was the most balls he’s stayed out in the middle for in an ODI match, although his strike rate of just 17.64 was the second lowest by an Australian in an ODI. Old school stuff.

Belinda Clark still holds the overall record for highest ODI score by an Australian, with her 229 in the 1997 women’s World Cup opening the batting – also in Mumbai.
