Feuding former teammates David Warner and Mitchell Johnson to come face to face at Perth Test

The stage is set for another showdown between former teammates David Warner and Mitchell Johnson - reigniting the war that raged throughout the summer last year.

Mitchell Johnson and David Warner are on track for a potentially awkward first Test meeting with the former Australian pace ace set to return to the commentary box this season.

While Johnson was not listed on Triple M’s media release on Tuesday announcing the majority of its suite of broadcasters for the summer, it’s understood he will again form part of the network’s commentary team for his home Test in Perth.

It paves the way for Johnson and Warner to cross paths in the Perth Stadium media centre given the ex-Test opener has signed to commentate this summer for Fox around his Big Bash League commitments for the Sydney Thunder.

It’s believed Johnson will not be part of the Triple M team for the one-day international between Australia and Pakistan on November 10 because of other commitments, delaying the prospect of him running into Warner.

The relationship between the Ashes and World Cup-winning teammates has become seriously strained in recent years, with the feud igniting into the public spotlight when Johnson took aim at Warner via a column in The Sunday Times in the lead-up to the opener’s farewell Test series against Pakistan.

Johnson argued that Warner had been indulged by national selectors and did not deserve to play in the three Tests, also claiming that selection chair George Bailey was too close to the national side.

Warner subsequently posted a ton against Pakistan in Perth, marking his century with a “shush” celebration seemingly directed towards Johnson in the media centre.

“You saw what it was. It was a nice little quiet shush,” Warner said at the time.

“It’s just anyone who wants to write stories about me and trying to use headlines, get headlines, that stuff doesn’t bother me. It’s just the fact that I have to go out there and do what I have to do. And I’m allowed to celebrate how I want.”

Among those confirmed as Triple M commentators for the summer are Mark Taylor, Mark Waugh, Merv Hughes, Ian Botham and Greg Blewett.

“Triple M’s cricket coverage this summer is going to be huge. We have five tests of the Aussies v India, the one-dayers and T20 games,” said Southern Cross Austereo head of sports content Ewan Giles.

“Plus, the team is excited to be calling the women’s matches. Whilst it gets hot out on the pitch, it also heats up in the commentary box and I know the team is fired up for the first match next week when the Aussies take on Pakistan in the day-night one-day international.”

Johnson explained a personal backstory to his spat with Warner that stemmed from comments Johnson had made about Warner’s wife Candice.

“I tried to ring [Warner] to talk to him about it, which I’ve always been open about with the guys,” Johnson said last year on the Mitchell Johnson Cricket Show podcast.

“It was never a personal thing then. Until that point.

“That is what prompted me to write the article, or part of it, as well. It’s definitely a factor.

“Some of the things that he mentioned in that message, I won’t say it because that’s up to Dave to say if he wants to talk about it, [but] there was some stuff in there which was extremely disappointing … and pretty bad to be honest.”

Johnson was also pulled by Cricket Australia from speaking engagements during the Perth Test because of the nature of his criticism.
