England have been dealt a blow with James Anderson ruled out of the remaining Tests in this Ashes series after again reporting problems with his calf.

The veteran fast bowler broke down after bowling just four overs in the first Test, but was expected to return for Wednesday’s fourth Test in Manchester.

Anderson had been bowling in a game for Lancashire’s second XI against Durham at Chester Boughton Hall that had been arranged as an extensive fitness test for the quick.

He bowled 20 overs on Tuesday but pulled up in the ninth over on Thursday reporting pain in his right calf. A decision to withdraw him from the Ashes was announced last night (AEST).

Somerset seamer Craig Overton, who has taken 32 wickets at an average of 21.34, returns to the squad for the first time since March 2018 to cover for the veteran, who has a career Test haul of 575 wickets.

Anderson, who is 37, is unlikely to play another Ashes series.

His absence increases the likelihood that Chris Woakes will retain his place in the team. The allrounder has not had a good series and may yet find himself carrying the drinks at Manchester.

Anderson’s absence is a blow to those looking forward to both sides returning to full strength for the last two matches.

Steve Smith missed the game at Headingley with concussion, but returned to batting duties in the tour game at Derby and appears to have recovered fully.

While England missed Anderson when they could not use him after he broke down in the first game, his place was more than filled by Jofra Archer who took five wickets and caused Smith’s concussion in his debut at Lord’s.

Archer confirmed the excitement around him when he took 6-45 in the first innings at Headingley.

The cricket world is waiting to see the result of his next meeting with Smith.
