David Warner has again been rested from Australian white-ball duties after he was left out of a 16-man squad named to play four limited-overs matches against Pakistan on the historic tour in March.

Fast-bowling trio Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, who are travelling for the three Tests as Australia tours Pakistan for the first time since 1998, have also been rested from white-ball duties.

Cummins, Hazlewood and Warner are all headed to the Indian Premier League after their Test duties conclude, but it’s understood Cricket Australia won’t be releasing them to join their franchises until their annual leave period begins on April 6 – the day after the Pakistan tour ends.

Selection chairman George Bailey declared there were a “number of challenges to juggle”, so batting star Marnus Labuschagne and all-rounder Cameron Green will get their limited-overs chances after being included in the group.

Glenn Maxwell also misses the tour having made himself unavailable as he’s getting married before heading to the IPL.

The keeping duties could also be shared by Alex Carey and Josh Inglis, with T20 gloveman Matthew Wade left at home given there is only the single T20 game.

“We have picked a talented and versatile squad with a number of challenges to juggle, including the tour structure of predominantly 50-over games, management of several multi-format players in the medium to long term, and our need to build experience and depth in preparation for two short-form World Cups within the next 18 months,” Bailey said.

“We’re confident the squad can both compete successfully on this tour and continue our progress towards those crucial tournaments.“

World Cup hero Mitchell Marsh will return, having missed the recent five-match T20 series against Sri Lanka, but Warner will continue his white-ball absence.

The opening batsman has not played in coloured clothing for Australia since he was named player of the tournament in the T20 World Cup. They were Warner’s only limited-overs games for Australia since a one-day series against India in November 2020.

Fast bowlers Nathan Ellis, Jason Behrendorff and Sean Abbott are also in the squad, with spinner Mitchell Swepson, who is in the extended 18-man group picked for the Test series, also missing the white-ball group.
