The wife of former Australian cricket team captain Tim Paine has opened up about her husband’s sexting scandal, revealing that the couple thought the incident had been “put to bed” when it first arose in 2018.

Bonnie Paine has told the Sunday Telegraph she’s moved beyond the time to be angry and vent and wishes to get on with life.

“I feel a bit frustrated that it’s all been brought up and aired in the public when we put it to bed years ago,” she said. “I have moved forward since then. I feel like there is a lot of injustice for it being dragged out again.”

Ms Paine said she believed the couple had been through the worst of it in 2018 during an initial investigation.

“We had all dealt with it. Tim had dealt with the repercussions from Cricket Australia, being scrutinised and investigated, and then he had to tell me and deal with me being upset,” she said. “Now, it seems unfair that it’s being aired out to everyone else to view and judge.”

Ms Paine recounted the moment she found out about the sexting in 2018, not long after the birth of their daughter, Mila.

“It was a terrible time. It was a time that would have been tough even if things were good. We had just had a little girl, I was pregnant again, and I’d just lost my Dad,” she said.

“I was in a really vulnerable situation already. The thought of ending my relationship on top of all of that was too much. Maybe that was a fortunate thing. I stayed, and he earned my trust back over time.”

Asked how she dealt with the situation, Ms Paine said it took time.

“I was pissed off for a long time, after it happened! At the time, my grief for my dad was more powerful than being angry at Tim,” she said.

“I learnt that I could forgive someone. I never thought I was strong enough to forgive someone, to move past it, and stick with them. I’ve learnt the skill of forgiveness, which is really difficult.”

While she may have forgiven Mr Paine, it took time to trust him, she said.

“My trust was a bit shattered from it and learning to try and trust again was a process. I had my doubts, and there were times where I wanted to leave, and there were times I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do,” she said.

“It was very confusing. It did take a long time for us to be strong again, and for us to be in a good place, but we are now.”
