BBL 2023: David Warner and Matthew Wade escape sanction over stoush, video

Audio not put to air by television has cleared David Warner and Matthew Wade for their exchange during a heated Big Bash clash in Hobart.

David Warner and Matthew Wade have not been sanctioned for their playful push and shove in the Big Bash.

Match officials decided against laying any charges from Sunday’s fiery clash in Hobart, also clearing the more heated verbal showdown between Hurricanes skipper Wade and Sydney Thunder captain Chris Green.

Despite the brief physical contact between Warner and Wade, match officials deemed it to be jocular in nature and not worthy of a fine.

Warner was mic’d up on the Channel 7 coverage and it’s understood audio not put to air backed up the context of his run-in with Wade being banter between two mates.

Match officials viewed several camera angles of Warner and Wade coming together which convinced them there was no malice involved.

They felt Wade’s hands in the air reaction was deliberately theatrical and footage from a subsequent over shortly after showed the long-time Australian teammates joking and laughing with each other.

Teams were told after the match that no further action would be taken by Cricket Australia.

The original incident which required more attention from officials was the verbal battle between Thunder bowler Green and Hurricanes batter Wade.

It’s understood there was fruity language used by both players, and Wade’s sledging of Green referenced the issue the Thunder spinner had with an illegal bowling action earlier in his career.

Match officials privately concede the showdown wasn’t a good look but umpires reported both players gave as good as they got. The fact the stoush wasn’t captured on stump microphones meant match officials could make a judgement call on whether to dish out punishment.

After the match Wade and Green both fronted a Channel 7 TV interview side-by-side and made it clear what happens on the field stays on the field.

It makes it hard for match officials to level charges when players protect each other.

Channel 7 and Fox Cricket have both enjoyed bumper ratings over the past two nights – among the highest recorded under this TV rights deal.

Saturday night’s Melbourne derby on Fox was the highest rating match of the season, while the Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers top of the table clash on Sunday night was a blockbuster across both Seven and Fox.

The Big Bash is humming again and the Thunder-Hurricanes clash highlights the fact players are buying into the competition, and are genuinely invested.

Every night of the BBL at the moment is producing genuine talking points and the competition is once again capturing the attention of the sporting public.
