Ashton Agar, David Warner called into ODI squad to face India

Spinner Ashton Agar has returned to Australia after failing to crack the Test side, but the break at home will be brief.

Glenn Maxwell is part of an almost full strength Australian One Day squad that will get important practice in India for the World Cup, which will be held in the that country in October.

Australia will play 50-over games against India in Mumbai (March 17), Vizag (March 19) and Chennai (March 22).

Josh Hazlewood, as reported, will be given time to recover from an achilles injury and David Warner is also expected to return to India after leaving the Test series on Monday with a fractured arm.

Hazlewood is being rested in the expectation Australia make the World Test Championship, which precedes the Ashes in June.

Should the side’s form line continue in India, however, and it not win a match it leaves the door open to again miss out if Sri Lanka can beat New Zealand at home in one of the two Tests to be played next month.

“It would be great for Josh to be part of this series but we have taken a conservative view ahead of a very important winter in England, of which he will be an integral part,” chief selector George Bailey said.

A host of other players will also make their way back from injury for the important preparation.

Maxwell, who returned to the Victorian Shield side last week, missed the recent tournament against England and most of the summer with a broken leg.

Mitch Marsh, who missed the entire summer after having surgery on his ankle, makes his return to cricket.

Marsh is expected to play the next two Marsh Cup matches for Western Australia before heading to India.

Jhye Richardson returns to the Australian team having recovered from a hamstring strain which ruled him out of the BBL finals.

“With the World Cup just over seven months away, these matches in India are an important step in our preparation. Glenn, Mitchell and Jhye are all important players in what we think the squad might look like come October,” Bailey said.
