Ashes cricket 2023: Candice Warner reveals fresh details of Lord’s Long Room abuse

Fresh information has emerged on the ugly scenes in the Lord’s Long Room during the second Test, with reports players were physically ‘kicked’ during the hostile incident.

Usman Khawaja bemoans abusive UK & Australian crowds

Candace Warner, wife of David, said on Fox Sports show The Back Page on Tuesday night that the MCC members who were abusing Australian cricketers after the infamous Jonny Bairstow stumping were not just vocal, but physical towards the Australian team.

While Warner did not reveal exactly who was targeted by the unruly MCC members, she did confirm that players were “kicked” as they made their way through the members’ only area after a heated first session of play.

“Jonny got up and had a few words, David had a few words back at him,” Candace Warner said on The Back Page on Tuesday night.

“That whole Test was pretty grubby to be completely honest. It was very disappointing, even after the game when the supporters stuck around. There were players like Starcy [Mitchell Starc] and Pat Cummins trying to do their media, the vile abuse kept going.

“It wasn’t just those images [where Warner and Khawaja confronted MCC members before security intervened]. It continued up two flights of stairs to the change room and two more flights of stairs up to where the boys were having lunch. You don’t want to see that anywhere.

“There were some players who actually were touched, were kicked. Usman Khawaja was really upset at what was directed at him as well.”
